Acadia Alumni Association names scholar and educator Dr. Blye Frank 2021 Distinguished Alumni Award recipient

By Fred Sgambati (’83) The Acadia Alumni Association is pleased to announce that Dr. Blye Frank (’77, ’81) is the recipient of this year’s Acadia Alumni Distinguished Alumni Award. Dr. Frank has enjoyed an outstanding 50-year career as a teacher, mentor, researcher, educator, trailblazer and administrator. He has three degrees from Acadia – BA (’77); BEd (’77); MEd (’81) – and a PhD from Dalhousie University (’90). He also holds a Diploma in Education, a Teaching Certificate in the Province of Nova Scotia, and is a Certified Canadian Counselor.

Mi’kmaw advocate Kayla Mansfield-Brown honoured with Outstanding Young Alumni Award

By Fred Sgambati (’83) The Acadia Alumni Association is pleased to announce that two-time graduate Kayla Mansfield-Brown (‘Dancing Deer’ - 2014, 2019) is the 2021 recipient of the Acadia Alumni Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Her impact as a woman, mother of four, Mi’kmaw leader and proud Acadia graduate who completed a Master’s of Education in Leadership at Acadia last year is difficult to overstate. A strong and outspoken advocate for social and environmental justice, gender equity and Indigenous rights, Kayla received in 2018 the ‘Fearless Leader’ Award from One Woman, an international organization dedicated to female empowerment, and earned the Graduate Student of the Year award at Acadia in 2019 for her commitment to academics and community involvement. More recently, Kayla was the recipient of the Dwight Dorey Youth Advocacy Award, presented to an Indigenous youth by the Congress of Aboriginal Peoples, which works to bring awareness to Indigenous rights, culture, education and language.

Natalie Irwin ('01)

Natalie Irwin (’01) resides in the Unceded Algonquin Anishinaabe Territories (Ottawa) where, in addition to completing an MA, Sustainable Energy Policy part-time at Carleton University, she is Director of Stakeholder Engagement at Efficiency Canada, the national voice for an energy efficiency economy. Prior to joining the national think-tank, Natalie managed the successful trade-ally program for EfficiencyOne, the franchise holder that operates Efficiency Nova Scotia for the province. As a Professional Business Relationship Manager, her role encompasses stakeholder engagement with North American energy efficiency organizations, partners, and associations. Upon graduation from Acadia University with her Bachelor of Business Administration, Natalie received the Golden A Award for her volunteer work with the Acadia Students’ Union, as a student member of the Board of Governors, and as SMARTT President of the former student-alumni group. Since then, Natalie has continued to be an active volunteer and in 2019 was awarded the national Chapter Volunteer Leadership Award from the Canada Green Building Council and received in 2016 the Best Super-Connector Award by Halifax Partnership for her work with their Connector Program.

Olivia Shive (’21)

Olivia Shive is a fourth-year biology student at Acadia University, from Elmsdale, Nova Scotia. She is involved in many volunteer activities, including Cornwallis Veterinarians, the S.M.I.L.E. program, the Hants Community hospital, and teaching dance. The biology program at Acadia has opened her eyes to many career options in the field, and she now dreams of becoming a veterinarian in the future. Outside of her education, she has a deep love for the art of dance. She has been a dancer since the age of three and has continued to dance through her time in university with Dance Acadia. Olivia loves to take on leadership roles and is excited to be Co-captain of Dance Acadia, where she can share her choreography skills with the team and others. She took on the role of Grad Class President for 2021 so she can stay connected with Acadia and continue all the friendly bonds that her peers have created throughout her time at university. It gives her great pride to be a part of the Acadia student body, and it means so much to her to represent her graduating class in her final year at Acadia.

Outstanding Young Alumni Award

The Acadia Alumni Outstanding Young Alumni Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of an Acadia University alumnus or alumna whose endeavours have distinguished them professionally or in the community and brought honour to the University. This award is intended to honour alumni who graduated within the past 10 years.

The Acadia Alumni Distinguished Alumni Award recognizes the outstanding achievements of an Acadia University alumnus or alumna whose endeavours have distinguished them professionally or in the community and brought honour to the University.

Acadia Alumni Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching

The Acadia Alumni Faculty Award for Excellence in Teaching recognizes a continued record of excellence in teaching students and future alumni of Acadia University with a focus on the faculty member’s professional and teaching accomplishments. Candidates for this award must be current full-time, part-time or contract members of the teaching faculty and have taught at Acadia University for at least three years.
